For an incredible 50 years, WIC has been transforming lives. Currently reaching over 6.7 million mothers and children monthly through more than 12,000 agencies, WIC continues to serve as a cornerstone of public health. That’s why the National WIC Association (NWA) is excited to give you a peek into the 2024 State of WIC Report—a celebration of five decades of impact and a vision for the program’s future.
WIC: A Lifeline for Families Since 1974
Those who have experience with WIC have always known WIC is more than just a nutrition program. WIC improves pregnancy outcomes, increases breastfeeding rates, and supports the healthy development of children in under-resourced communities. From the opening of the first clinic in Pineville, KY, the program has provided families with essential nutrition, education, and healthcare referrals, translating into better long-term health outcomes and significant healthcare cost savings.
As the nation's first “Food as Medicine” program, WIC demonstrates that access to nutritious food is essential for lifelong health. For millions of women and children at nutritional risk, WIC has been a lifeline that supports healthier families and futures.
Modernizing for the Future
While WIC has achieved much, the 2024 State of WIC Report identifies critical areas to ensure its continued success in a rapidly evolving world:
Modernizing Technology: Modern families deserve a modern program that meets them where they are at. Congress must make remote services permanent and expand online food ordering options to meet families’ needs.
Increasing Participation: Many eligible families still don’t participate in WIC. Simplifying enrollment processes and strengthening outreach efforts are key to reaching all who need the program’s services.
Investing in the Workforce: WIC’s dedicated staff is crucial to the program's success. Investing in diversity, professional development, and creating a supportive environment for staff will enhance WIC’s ability to serve families.
Sustainable Funding: With an increasingly hyper-political Congress, stable funding is essential for WIC’s long-term impact. The report urges Congress to explore mandatory funding for WIC to ensure its sustainability.
A Vision for the Future
As we launch into the next 50 years, NWA is more committed than ever to championing this incredible program. We're rallying our members, amplifying our voices, and ensuring WIC remains a powerhouse in public health. Together, we're creating a healthier, brighter future for generations to come.
