This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by advancing the health and well-being of California’s diverse people and communities. As an employee of the Communications, Food, and Vendor Policy Branch, the incumbent serves as part of a team that monitors, improves, and implements local and statewide policies which protect and serve the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program participants, vendors, and local agencies. The HPS II’s work is critical as it ensures that the Department’s and Division’s goals to implement modernizations such as WIC food package changes and online shopping are met within USDA and legislative timelines.
The incumbent works under the direction of the Vendor Policy and Food Package Section Chief, Staff Services Manager II (SSM II). The Health Program Specialist II (HPS II) provides leadership, coordination, and technical oversight to monitor, evaluate, and improve procedures, policies, and regulations that impact the Section and Division. In this role, the HPS II is responsible for leading workgroups within the WIC Program to develop, analyze, and implement policies, procedures, and regulations for the Vendor Policy and Food Package Section. This position communicates with internal and external stakeholders such as WIC local agency staff, food manufacturers, food industry groups, and federal and state partners. This position requires a strong knowledge of the WIC regulatory bulletin process and the nutritional requirements for WIC Program participants.
