WASHINGTON, DC—On Friday, the U.S. Senate passed a Continuing Resolution to fund the federal government through September 30, 2025, avoiding a potential shutdown and ensuring the government remains operational through the remainder of Fiscal Year 2025.
The National WIC Association (NWA) is pleased to see Congress maintain its commitment to providing full funding to meet WIC’s projected participation and food costs. This funding ensures that millions of pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and young children will continue receiving the critical nutrition support they need to build a healthier future.
However, we are disappointed that other federal nutrition programs were overlooked in the process. Programs such as the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), which provides nutritious food to low-income seniors, and The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), which supports food banks and pantries across the nation, did not receive the necessary funding increases. These programs are lifelines for millions of Americans facing food insecurity, and their underfunding jeopardizes our nation’s ability to effectively address hunger within communities.
As Congress shifts its focus to Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations, we urge lawmakers to prioritize the passage of full-year appropriations in a timely manner. Continuing resolutions, while sometimes necessary, create significant challenges for programs like WIC, which rely on stable and predictable funding to serve participants effectively. Short-term funding measures disrupt planning, limit the ability to implement long-term improvements, and create uncertainty for both program administrators and the families who depend on these services.
Adequate funding is not only a moral imperative but also a sound economic investment, as these programs have been proven to improve health outcomes, reduce healthcare costs, and support economic stability for families. NWA stands ready to work with policymakers to ensure no family goes hungry and every American has access to the nutrition they need to thrive.
