WASHINGTON, DC – Thursday afternoon, the US Senate confirmed Brooke Rollins as the US Secretary of Agriculture in a 72-28 vote. Rollins, a lawyer and former chief domestic policy advisor during the Trump administration, will assume leadership of the Department of Agriculture, where she will oversee critical programs impacting nutrition and food security, rural development, and agricultural policy.
The following is a statement from Georgia Machell, president and CEO of the National WIC Association (NWA):
“As Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins begins her new role, we welcome the opportunity to work alongside her to ensure the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) receives the support and resources it needs to effectively serve America's families. For more than 50 years, WIC has stood as an essential public health program, acting as a lifeline for millions of women, infants, and children across the nation. Its proven ability to improve health outcomes, reduce food insecurity, and strengthen communities has earned WIC decades of strong bipartisan support—a testament to its critical role as a cornerstone of public health and nutrition.
WIC is more than a nutrition program; it’s a vital investment in the health and future of our families and communities. By providing access to healthy foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and critical healthcare referrals, WIC helps improve birth and maternal health outcomes and boost local economies.
“NWA stands ready to collaborate with Secretary Rollins and offer insight into how different federal nutrition programs work together to support the health and well-being of American families. We look forward to ensuring WIC remains fully funded and accessible to every eligible family who relies on its support. Together, we can strengthen this important program and ensure it continues to meet the needs of those who depend on it most.”
